The International Semiconductor Industry Association (semi) announced on September 8 that the global shipment of semiconductor manufacturing equipment reached US $26.43 billion in the second quarter, with a quarterly increase of 7% and an annual increase of 6%. In terms of quarterly shipments amount by region, Taiwan, China leads the way, surpassing the mainland and South Korea.

Quarterly shipments amount by region increased by 32% annually to US $6.68 billion in the Taiwan, China market, ranking first. China, which ranked first last year, fell by 20% to $6.56 billion, ranking second. South Korea, which has two major memory system manufacturers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, ranked third with an annual decrease of 13% to US $5.78 billion.

Among the global semiconductor equipment sales market share in the second quarter, Taiwan, China, and South Korea alone accounted for 72%, but this result was lower than 80% in the same period last year.

In terms of annual growth rate, Europe has the largest annual growth rate of 162%, and North America also has a substantial growth rate of 57%. Compared with the same period last year, the two regions of Europe and North America have experienced growth for five consecutive quarters since the second quarter of 2021. The main reason is that local manufacturers actively accept government support, promote factory construction and expansion plans, and drive the growth of semiconductor equipment demand.

The sales of semiconductor equipment in the Japanese market in the second quarter reached 1.65 billion US dollars, a quarterly decrease of 13% and an annual decrease of 7%.

In 2022, Japan's semiconductor equipment sales will exceed 4 trillion yen for the first time

In July this year, the Japan semiconductor manufacturing devices Association (SEAJ) released a forecast report that the sales of semiconductor equipment in Japan in 2022 (April 2022 March 2023) will exceed 4 trillion yen for the first time.

The report points out that although inflation and other factors have impacted personal consumption expenditure, coupled with the continuous supply chain chaos and parts shortage, the sales of Japanese semiconductor equipment in 2022 has been revised up to 402.83 million yen from the previous estimate of 3.55 trillion yen because large logic / wafer foundries and memory chip factories maintain positive investment intentions.

It should be noted that SEAJ has previously revised its 2022 Japanese semiconductor equipment sales forecast in January this year, and this is the second time this year.

According to SEAJ's data, Japan's actual sales in 2021 increased by 44.4% year-on-year to 3.443 trillion yen. It is expected that it will continue to grow after 2022, with a year-on-year increase of 5% to 4.2297 trillion yen in 2023 and a year-on-year increase of 5% to 4.4412 trillion yen in 2024.
