When you work with pneumatics, a reliable hose clamp is critical. Pneumatic systems need to be able to store compressed gas without a change in pressure. Of course, hose clamps can be used with hydraulics as well. In this case, reliability is important because of safety issues. If hydraulic oil leaks, there is a chance of fire, slipping, and environmental contamination.
Pneumatic systems work well for networks that require control and simplicity of design, while hydraulic systems are ideal for moving higher loads — they are often exposed to pressures 50 times as great as what pneumatics experience. Hose clamps are an important part of both of these systems. Here are three types of hose clamps, and the applications they are commonly used for.
1.Spring Clamps
These clamps are usually made from spring steel strips rolled into rings, and are characterized by narrow protrusions that are bent outward. The protrusions, or tabs, are pressed together, increasing the ring diameter. The clamp is fitted over a hose and barb, then released, which compresses the two together. This clamp is typically only used for pneumatic type systems, since they cannot withstand high pressures.
2.Swing Clamps
Swing clamps have swinging arms that can move in order to assist loading and unloading. This type of clamp is more complex in construction than the spring clamp, consisting of multiple parts. These are ideal hose clamps for hydraulic pressure, and they can be successfully used as heavy duty hose clamps. As Plant Engineering points out on their list of “Nine reasons why hydraulic hoses fail,” it’s incredibly important that the hose be properly routed through the clamps and pivot points. About 60% of premature hose failures are the result of improper routing, because it leads to abrasion.
3.Worm Gear Clamps
Worm gear clamps, also known as screw clamps, are stainless hose clamps composed of a band with a screw thread pattern. The end of the band retains a captive screw. When the screw is turned, it operates as a worm drive, tightening the band around the hose. Worm gear clamps are appropriate for lower pressure systems, and are typically used in domestic wastewater piping.
