Capacitors are widely used passive components, and their main function is to charge and discharge electric charges. Depending on the dielectric, capacitors can be divided into ceramic capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors, tantalum electrolytic capacitors, and film capacitors. Ceramic capacitors currently occupy more than half of the market share in the capacitor market due to their small size and wide voltage range.
Ceramic capacitors can be divided into single-layer ceramic capacitors (SLCC), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) and leaded multilayer ceramic capacitors.
Among them, multilayer ceramic capacitors are the most widely used basic electronic components and are known as "industrial rice". According to the data of the Prospective Industry Research Institute, the market size of multilayer ceramic capacitors accounts for 93% of the entire ceramic capacitors.
Basic disk expansion
In addition to the characteristics of capacitors "blocking direct current and passing alternating current", MLCC also has the advantages of small size, large capacitance, good frequency characteristics, wide operating voltage and operating temperature ranges, and no polarity. It is widely used in consumer electronics, automotive electronics, aerospace, ships, weapons, medical equipment, rail transit and other fields.
According to the data of Zhiduoxing Consulting, in 2020, the application proportion of MLCC in the fields of mobile terminal, automobile and military industry will be 33.3%, 13.8% and 12.3% respectively, and the total proportion is about 59.4%. At present, the popularity of 5G and smart electric vehicles will bring new incremental space for MLCC.
In the automotive field, electric power, intelligence and networking are all realized through functional modules composed of various electronic components. With the upgrading of the automotive industry, the demand for automotive-grade MLCCs continues to increase. According to the data of China Electronic Components Association, the consumption of MLCC bicycles for pure electric vehicles is about 18,000, which is far more than that of traditional fuel vehicles. According to data from Zhiduoxing Consulting, the global demand for MLCCs for automobiles in 2020 is about 379 billion pieces, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%; it is expected that the global demand for MLCCs for automobiles will reach 473 billion pieces by 2025, with an average five-year growth rate of about 4.6%.
On the other hand, vehicle-grade MLCCs have high quality requirements, which will inevitably increase the value of a single product. Taking the operating temperature range of MLCCs as an example, the maximum operating temperature of consumer MLCCs is generally 85°C to 125°C, but automotive-grade MLCCs generally require a minimum of 125°C. In addition, the life requirements of vehicle-grade MLCCs have also increased significantly. The lifespan of consumer MLCCs is generally 3-5 years, but the lifespan of automotive-grade MLCCs requires more than 15 years.
The popularization of 5G communication technology has led to an increase in the demand for passive components of consumer electronics.
According to New Life's prospectus (declaration draft), the single-unit consumption of MLCC in 5G mobile phones will rise to more than 1,000, while the single-unit consumption of MLCC in traditional mobile phones is only 290 to 350. According to Murata's forecast data, with the development of 5G, the demand for MLCCs for smartphones and base stations will continue to grow.
According to data from Paumanok, from 2011 to 2019, global MLCC shipments increased from 2.3 trillion to 4.49 trillion, with a CAGR of about 8.72%. According to the forecast of Zhiduoxing Consulting, by 2025, the global MLCC market size is expected to reach 149 billion yuan, with a compound growth rate of about 7.9% from 2020 to 2025.
Grasp the expansion market
From the perspective of production technology level, global MLCC manufacturers can be divided into three echelons:
The first echelon is Japanese companies represented by Murata, TDK, and Taiyo Yuden. Their products cover four fields: small size and low capacity, small size and high capacity, large size and low capacity, and large size and high capacity. It has strong technical and scale advantages.
The second echelon is South Korean and Taiwanese companies represented by Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Yageo, and Walsin. The production capacity of MLCC is relatively large, but there is still a certain gap between the technical level and the Japanese manufacturers.
Companies such as Fenghua High-Tech, Tri-Ring Group, EYANG, Torch Electronics, Hongyuan Electronics and VIIYONG Technology in mainland China are ranked in the third echelon of MLCC, and there is a gap between the first and second echelons in terms of technology and scale.
Murata, Samsung Electromechanical and other Japanese and Korean companies have been deeply involved in MLCC for many years. With the accumulation of materials, processes and equipment over the years, they are in an advantageous position in the MLCC market and occupy a relatively high market share. According to data from Zhiduoxing Consulting, the top five manufacturers account for about 79% of the market share in 2020, of which high-end production capacity is concentrated in Japanese manufacturers.
Under the background of industry improvement and localization, local enterprises have a strong willingness to expand production. Fenghua Hi-Tech plans to invest 7.505 billion yuan in the construction of "Xianghe Industrial Park High-end Capacitor Base Construction Project", which is expected to reach production in 2024, and will realize the new monthly capacity of high-end MLCC of about 45 billion units (the new annual capacity is about 540 billion units). Sanhuan Group plans to invest 4.102 billion yuan for the "high-capacity series multi-layer chip ceramic capacitor expansion project". After the project is put into production, it will add 300 billion MLCCs per year.
Compared with foreign enterprises, domestic MLCC production enterprises will expand their production more, which will speed up the process of localization and substitution of MLCC, and will also promote the further development of domestic upstream related industries.
The popularization of any product and technology starts with the launch of production equipment. Previously, high-end casting machines, lamination machines, six-sided inspection machines, etc. were mainly supplied to Japanese and Korean companies. With the development of the domestic MLCC industry, and domestic enterprises With the continuous advancement of technology, domestic MLCC equipment manufacturers have gradually achieved breakthroughs in some links.
The inspection speed of Ordwei's six-sided inspection machine has exceeded 10,000 pieces/min, and the inspection speed and accuracy have reached the industry-leading level, and it is expected to quickly realize localization.
The MLCC release film is used in the tap casting process of MLCC, and the area of the release film consumed in the production of single-layer MLCC is roughly equal to that of MLCC. According to the data of China Electronic Components Industry Association and China Economic Research Institute, the global demand for MLCC release film is expected to be 10.5 billion square meters in 2021 and will reach 12 billion square meters in 2025.
At present, the market of MLCC release film is mainly occupied by Japanese and Korean enterprises. Domestic enterprises have integrated the industrial chain layout of MLCC release film and raw material PET base film, and it is expected to speed up the process of domestic replacement of release film in the future.
In 2020, Stick invested in the construction of a production line with an annual output of 150 million square meters of precision release film, with a construction period of 2 years; In 2021, Stick invested in the construction of two functional PET optical film projects with an annual output of 25,000 tons, which will realize self-sufficiency of release film raw materials after completion.The monthly production capacity of Jiemei Technology's domestic release film production line is 10 million square meters. Two wide-format high-end production lines imported from South Korea have been put into operation in January 2021, with a total monthly production capacity of 7-8 million square meters and an annual output of 18,000 tons. The optical BOPET film project is expected to be put into trial production in October 2021, and it is planned to meet the standard requirements for producing high-end release films after 2-3 months of quality improvement.
