Recently, the latest data from the market research organization IC Insights shows that it is expected that by 2022, the market for CMOS image sensors, the largest chip category in the optoelectronics field, may suffer the first decline in 13 years, with sales falling by 7% to $18.6 billion. Volumes are expected to fall 11% to $6.1 billion.
CMOS image sensors have been favored by the market since their inception, and have maintained strong growth for most of the past two decades, with sales accounting for more than 40% of Opto Semiconductors' total annual revenue.
However, due to the decline in demand for smartphones, tablets, and PCs, the consumer electronics market continues to weaken, and the consumer MCU, memory chips, GPU and other chip categories have fallen into a downturn, and CMOS image sensors have also been affected this time. In fact, in 2020 and 2021, CMOS image sensor sales will only increase by 4% and 5%. According to the latest data from CINNO Research, smartphone sales in mainland China in July were about 22.1 million units, down 4.8% month-on-month and 17.7% year-on-year, setting the worst July single-month sales since 2015. This makes the inventory backlog of CMOS image sensors more and more serious.
Regarding the future market situation, IC Insights is relatively optimistic, believing that CMOS image sensors will recover slowly and steadily, driven by the new upgrade purchase cycle of smartphones. Additionally, as technology develops, more embedded cameras will be added to systems such as automotive automation, telemedicine, and smart safety networks, accelerating the resurgence of CMOS image sensors. Market revenue for CMOS image sensors is expected to grow 4% to $19.3 billion in 2023 and 13% to reach a record high of $21.7 billion in 2024.
In terms of sales volume, CMOS image sensors are expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.0% between 2021 and 2026, reaching $26.9 billion in 2026. Shipments will grow at a CAGR of 6.9%.
Sony, the leader in the CMOS image sensor market, will account for about 43% of global CMOS image sensor sales in 2021. According to its published report, as of June 2022, the dollar sales revenue of its image sensors will drop by 12.4% month-on-month. But Sony is equally confident that by early 2023, excess inventory of handsets and image sensors will be reduced and market conditions will return to "normalize" in the second half of the year.
